The Porsche 997 generation was a huge success, with around 213,000 cars produced between 2005 and 2012. Porsche model years (MY) typically run from August of one year to July of the next. In 2008, for the 2009 model year, Porsche introduced significant updates that marked the start of the 997.2 generation—identified by a ‘9’ in the tenth digit of the chassis number.
Engine & Transmission Upgrades
The most significant leap from 997.1 to 997.2 was under the hood. The Gen2 997 introduced Porsche’s Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) technology, which delivers fuel directly into the combustion chamber. This precision improved throttle response, increased fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions. The DFI engine also eliminated the troublesome IMS bearing found in the 997.1, thanks to a redesigned engine with fewer moving parts and updated cylinder liners that minimised bore scoring issues. Power output increased to 345 BHP for the 3.6L and 385 BHP for the 3.8L engines.
On the transmission side, the 997.1’s traditional Tiptronic automatic—rooted in 1980s tech—was phased out. The 997.2 introduced the advanced PDK gearbox (Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe or dual-clutch transmission). Initially developed for racing in the 1980s and refined over decades, PDK offers lightning-fast gear shifts by preselecting gears based on acceleration and deceleration data. This not only boosts performance but also improves fuel economy and reduces emissions. The PDK-equipped 997.2 Carrera S, for example, accelerates to 62 mph 0.2 seconds faster than its manual counterpart.
Exterior Enhancements
While subtle, the 997.2 featured some stylish updates to the bodywork:
- Redesigned front bumper with integrated LED daytime running lights
- Standard Bi-Xenon headlights
- Updated LED rear light clusters
- New wheel designs, including 997 Turbo II and 19” facelift alloys
Interior Improvements
Inside, the 997.2 brought a few welcome upgrades:
- PCM 3 navigation system with touchscreen activation, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and multimedia input
- Higher-quality black trim surrounding plastic panels for a more refined finish
Expanded Model Lineup
The 997.2 also saw the addition of several notable models, some of which have become legends in the Porsche world:
- Black Edition: Available only on the 3.6 Carrera Coupe and Cabriolet
- GTS: Offered in both Coupe and Cabriolet, with manual or PDK options
- 997 Turbo S: Produced from 2010 to 2012, exclusively with PDK
- GT3 RS 4.0: The final “Mezger” engine model, boasting 500 bhp, limited to 600 units
- 997 GT2 RS: A 620 bhp manual beast, with only 500 made
- 997 Speedster: Just 356 units built, celebrating 25 years of Porsche Exclusive
