An engine or gearbox rebuild is one of the biggest decisions a Porsche owner makes. Lawrence McGovern plans and oversees every rebuild himself, on air-cooled and water-cooled cars, for the road or the track, so nothing is rushed and nothing is skipped.

Lawrence’s approach is simple: do it once and do it properly. Whether it’s a sympathetic rebuild of an original engine or a build with carefully chosen upgrades, the aim is reliability and longevity.

We use genuine Porsche parts, or proven uprated components where they’re the better choice. Most of the work is done in-house. When machining is needed, it goes to specialists we’ve trusted for years.

Mechanical Failures & Preventative Rebuilds

Even well-maintained engines can fail. On the M96 and M97 engines in many 996, 997, Boxster and Cayman models, IMS bearing failure and bore scoring are two of the best-known reasons for a rebuild. Gearboxes wear too, particularly synchros and bearings on high-mileage cars.

When something has failed, Lawrence will explain what’s happened, what the realistic options are, and how to stop it happening again. Not every rebuild is a repair, though. Some owners refresh an engine or gearbox before problems start, or to change how the car delivers its power.
