Porsche 928, 944 and 968 Specialist in High Wycombe

Porsche’s front-engined cars have a loyal following, and fewer specialists who really know them. We look after the 928, 944 and 968, and the 924 that started the line, at our workshop in High Wycombe, with the same care we give a classic 911.

The transaxle Porsches

  • 924 (1976 to 1988)
  • 928 (1977 to 1995): the V8 grand tourer
  • 944 (1982 to 1991)
  • 968 (1991 to 1995)

All four put the engine at the front and the gearbox at the back, joined by a tube that carries the driveshaft. It’s a clever layout with its own maintenance needs.

What we look out for

The most important job on most of these cars is the timing belt, and on engines that have them, the balance shaft belts. Changing them at the right interval and tensioning them correctly matters, because a belt failure can do serious engine damage. Cooling systems, water pumps, clutches, the driveline between engine and gearbox, and decades-old electrics and rubber all need attention too.

These cars should run on E5 super unleaded. Our guides to owning a 924, 928, 944 or 968 and E10 fuel explain why.

Servicing and repairs

We service these cars to Porsche’s schedule, adjusted for their age, with genuine Porsche parts where they’re still available and parts we trust where they’re not. Repairs and restoration work are part of our maintenance and repair service, and major mechanical work is handled in the same workshop as our engine and gearbox rebuilds.

Buying a 928, 944 or 968

History is everything on a car of this age, especially evidence of when the belts were last done. A pre-purchase inspection at the workshop tells you what you’re buying and what’s due before you commit.

Common questions

Do you work on the Porsche 924?

Yes, along with the 928, 944 and 968. We look after every Porsche, from the early air-cooled 911s to the front-engined cars.

How often should the cambelt be changed on a 944 or 968?

At the interval Porsche specifies for that engine, and straight away if the history doesn’t show when it was last done. Tensioning matters as much as the belt itself.

What fuel should I use in a 928, 944 or 968?

E5 super unleaded. The UK government’s E10 checker doesn’t clear these cars for E10.
