Air-cooled Porsches have been part of Chelsea Carrera from the start. Lawrence McGovern has worked on them since they were everyday cars, and he looks after 911s, 912s and other air-cooled models with the respect for originality they deserve.
Routine servicing, fault-finding, sympathetic restoration and pre- and post-purchase inspections are all approached the same way: carefully, with the right parts, and with an eye on keeping the car original where that matters to you.
Air-cooled cars need different knowledge from modern ones. The oil level is checked differently, most models need their valve clearances adjusting, and age matters as much as mileage when it comes to rubber, fuel lines and seals. How a Porsche air-cooled engine works explains why.
Heritage & Experience
Lawrence’s career with Porsche runs from AFN and Ruf GB to the workshop he set up behind Stamford Bridge, and now High Wycombe. Over four decades he has built up the kind of hands-on knowledge of air-cooled engines and gearboxes that doesn’t come from a manual, and it goes into every classic that comes through the workshop.
