Porsche Boxster and Cayman Specialist in High Wycombe

The Boxster and Cayman are some of the most rewarding Porsches to own, and some of the most misunderstood. We look after every generation, from the first 986 Boxster to the 718, at our workshop in High Wycombe, with the same care we give a 911.

Every Boxster and Cayman generation

  • 986 Boxster (1996 to 2004): the original mid-engined Boxster
  • 987 Boxster and Cayman (2005 to 2012): the first Cayman, and a new engine for the 987.2 from 2009
  • 981 Boxster and Cayman (2012 to 2016)
  • 718 Boxster and Cayman (from 2016): turbocharged four-cylinder engines in most versions

The mid-engined layout means some jobs take a different approach from a 911, and a few take longer. That’s normal, and it’s one reason it pays to use someone who works on these cars all the time.

What we look out for

The 986 and the 987.1 share the M96 and M97 engines with the 996 and 997.1, so the IMS bearing, bore scoring, rear main seal leaks and air-oil separator failures all apply. From the 987.2 onwards, the newer engines have no IMS bearing.

On every generation, the front radiators collect leaves and debris, and Boxster roofs and drains need looking after. Our guide to common Boxster and Cayman problems covers each generation in detail.

Servicing and repairs

Every Boxster and Cayman is serviced to Porsche’s schedule, with genuine Porsche parts as standard, Mobil lubricants and PIWIS 4 diagnostics. We also handle repairs and maintenance, diagnostics, PDK servicing on the cars that have it, and engine and gearbox rebuilds.

Buying a Boxster or Cayman

Prices make these cars tempting, which is exactly why the history and condition matter. A pre-purchase inspection at the workshop shows you what you’re buying, and our 987 buyer’s guide explains what we check on one of the most popular generations.

Common questions

Does my Boxster or Cayman have an IMS bearing?

The 986 Boxster and the 987.1 Boxster and Cayman do, because they use M96 and M97 engines. The 987.2, 981 and 718 don’t.

Is a Boxster or Cayman cheaper to service than a 911?

Not always. Many jobs are similar, and the mid-engined layout can make some of them take longer. We quote each car individually, based on what’s due and the parts you prefer.

Do you work on the 718 four-cylinder models?

Yes. We look after every generation of Boxster and Cayman, including the 718.
